What some people won't do for a mention in the Lowdown!

January 4, 2007

I got a very strange phone call in the middle of the night last week, and I'm not sure what to make of it. At first all I could hear was the sound of heavy breathing, but after I said hello several times a male voice asked me a very odd question.

"So, what are you wearing?"

"What?!?"

"What are you wearing to the next MEWL show?"

"Umm... I don't know. I..."

"Oh, God, I'm going to come!"

"WHAT!?!?"

"I'm going to come to the next MEWL show! Are you?"

"Well, yeah, I mean, I only missed one, so..."

"Oh, good. I was hoping you'd come. I'll see you then, stud!"

And with that he hung up... Strange days indeed.

Speaking of strange, I'll never get over just how much attention wrestlers can crave sometimes. I mentioned before how Chris Kole - more on him later - was offended by some of my comments in a previous Lowdown, and how much he seemed to want the approval of the fans. It seemed strange to me that someone so talented and so successful could care at all about what I have to say. Well it seems at least one other wrestler has also been craving a positive word or two in the Lowdown, and he got tired of waiting.

At MEWL's last stop in Alliance, Holiday Beatings, Brandon X and Luis Diamante made their debut as a tag team to be reckoned with, interrupting what had been a great title defense between champs Jazin Blaze and Chris Kole and challengers Christian Faith and Vincent Nothing, and leaving both teams temporarily laid out. As they left the ring, Brandon yelled "That better make the Lowdown!"

All I could do was shake my head. Some guys are so desperate for attention that they'll do anything - go to any length, take any shortcut - just to get some publicity. Well congrats, Brandon. You got a mention in the Lowdown. And all you had to do was sell your soul to get it.

But even if Diamante and X were Grinches, MEWL as a whole was showing the true spirit of the season, helping the Alliance Fire Department by raffling off an X-Box 360 and collecting toys for their annual toy drive. It's just one more thing that separates MEWL from your average indy; we run quality shows on a regular basis AND give a damn about our community!

My front office sources tell me controversy is raging among the Championship Committee. One faction would like to see former North American Champion Wilbur Whitlock get a shot at current champ Lones Oaks. They argue that Whitlock was never beaten for the belt AND earned a win over Oaks at Holiday Beatings, so he should be the number one contender. The other side points out that Whitlock was never beaten for the belt because he abandoned it and MEWL rather than face Oaks in the ring, and that his win was a little... tainted. Rumor has it Whitlock himself has been lobbying the Committee night and day, and that they hope to reach a decision by the time we return to Alliance.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but negotiations are continuing between the front office and Shane Sensation, who made a brief return to MEWL before no-showing an event and leaving partner "Killer" Chris Kole in a bind. But the Killer found himself a new partner, the aforementioned Jazin Blaze, and the two went on to win the MEWL Tag Team Championship. Now sources tell me that Kole isn't missing his old partner so much, and rumor has it that when, and if, Shane makes his return, he may have one less friend in the locker room and one more enemy in the ring.

On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be any tension between former Tag Champs "The Upgrade" Tyrone Evans and Kano Karter. In fact, B.E.T. added a new member to their ranks at Holiday Beatings, as Rageous made an impressive debut, getting the win over "Big Guns" Jeff Cannon, albeit with a little help from his friends. "The Upgrade" Tyrone Evans then narrowly missed taking the World Heavyweight Championship from Robby Starr in the main event. Add to that the fact that Kano is already the Cruiserweight Champion, and you can see that B.E.T. is a formidable force in MEWL. In fact, I'm going to make a little prediction for the new year: Before 2007 comes to a close, there will be gold around the waists of all three members of this impressive team.

I'll make one other prediction, too: MEWL's next stop in Alliance, No Love Lost, will be a kick-ass show. In addition to all your MEWL favorites, Jessyka Havok will be making a return to Alliance and, my sources tell me, another superstar who has been missing in action will show up. It's a no-brainer; you get all the usual great MEWL action with a couple returns and surprises thrown in. Folks, don't miss this one, because you'll regret it if you do!
